Little Edie Beale, Campfires, and Minimalism: First Look at J.Crew Fall

“It’s like if Little Edie Beale enlists in the army,” says J.Crew creative director Jenna Lyons. She’s just phoned Vogue from Milk Studios a few hours before the brand’s fall collection previews there to fill us in on her latest looks. “There’s a slightly utilitarian feel—a little military, but more ‘young girl goes to camp for the first time.’ ” And to emphasize the Grey Gardens–gathers–round–the–campfire theme, the models will even have twigs in their hair, Lyons reveals.

The fall collection, of course, embodies J.Crew’s romantic-preppy (think rosette-decorated tees and the perfect boyfriend khakis) look we all know and love. But we’re curious: How can a J.Crew shopper reconcile the label’s sometimes-more-is-more aesthetic with the new minimalism, fashion’s latest favorite word? “For the sake of our customers, we wouldn’t want to change all of the sudden,” Lyons explains. But those who are interested in a J.Crew spin on the new spareness should take a peek, Lyons suggests, at fall’s simple plaid poncho or its cocoon coat. “That one creates a very fluid shape,” she says. “It’s not about being roughed up a bit or vintage-y.” Or the little shearling jacket. “That one is all about texture. It has not a single detail on it—not even a closure. It speaks for itself.” See below for our favorite fall J.Crew looks—minimalist or not!
